Poker Lexicon - Poker Terms Beginning With 'H'
Half bet rule - In some casinos, the rule that placing chips equal to or greater than half the normal bet amount beyond the amount required to call constitutes a commitment to raise the normal amount. For example, in a game with a $4 fixed limit, a player facing a $4 opening bet who places $6 in the pot is deemed to have raised, and must complete his bet to $8.
Half kill - A kill for less than double the normal limits. For example, a $6 game may have a kill for $9 rather than the usual $12.
Half-pot limit - A betting structure resembling pot limit, but which allows maximum raises of half the amount in the pot rather than the full amount.
Hammer - To bet and raise aggressively. Andre kept hammering, so I folded. "Having the hammer" is being in last position, especially head up. You've got the hammer; I check to you.
Hand - A player's best five cards.
Hand for hand - In tournament play, the act of equalizing the number of hands played at two or more tables by waiting for slower tables to finish each hand before beginning the next hand on every table. This is usually done to ensure an accurate finishing order to distribute prize money.
Handhistory, hand history - The textual representation of a hand (or hands) played in an Internet cardroom.
Hard - Aggressive and uncompromising, said of one's play. Nick played me hard all night; I could never get a break. Chips, as opposed to paper money.
Hard Rock - A particularly tight player.
Heads-up - When only two players are involved with a hand.
Heinz - Pocket cards OF 5-7 in Hold’em.
Hearts - One of the four playing card suits.
High, high hand - The best hand using traditional poker hand values, as opposed to lowball. Used especially in high-low split games.
High-card - To decide the first dealer in the flop tournaments each user is dealt a single card and the player with the highest card (based on the card and the suit order - of spades, hearts, diamonds & clubs) becomes the theoretical dealer.
High Limit - A game where the amounts wagered are high.
High Roller - A player who gambles for large sums of money.
High society - Large-denomination chips.
Hi/lo - Split pot games.
Hilton Sisters - Pocket Queens.
Hit - To catch a card required to make a hand.
Hit and run - To play for a short time, make money, and leave. Also called chopping a game.
Hog, hogger - To win all of the pot in a split-pot game, for example, by having both the best high hand and best low hand simultaneously. Also called scooping the pot.
Hole Cards - These are the ‘down cards’ in front of the players.
Hole cam - A camera that displays a player's face-down cards ("hole cards") to television viewers. Also "pocket cam".
Hold'em - Also known as Texas Hold'em, where the players get two down cards and five community cards.
Hold Out - To deliberately conceal cards for the purposes of introducing them to the game later, a common form of cheating.
Hollywood - Overt acting to deceive other players. Karl had a big smile when he bet, but it seemed too Hollywood to me, so I called anyway.
Home game - A game played at a private venue (usually the home of one of the players), as opposed to a casino or public cardroom.
Home Run Hitter - A player who makes big plays that have miximum risk.
Hooks - Pocket Jacks.
Honest - To call another player's bets in case they are bluffing to ensure that they do not win the pot by default. Also called "paying to see", in that if a player wins a pot by default, he or she is not obliged to show his or her hand because nobody paid to see what the player has.
Honor card - Any card ranked between Jack and Ace.
Hop the fence - To enter the pot with a cold call.
Horse - A player financially backed by someone else. I lost today, but Kim was my horse in the stud game, and he won big.
H.O.R.S.E - A combination game with five games played in rotation: Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hold’em, razz, seven-card stud, and eight-or-better seven-card stud high-low.
House - The casino or cardroom that is hosting the poker game.
House Rules - The written or assumed rules and regulations that govern the specific play of poker in a given place; i.e. "The House Rule here is that a Five-of-a-Kind beats a Royal Flush."
Hot - When a player is on a winning streak he may be described as running hot.
Hustler - A person who play poker for his daily living.
