Poker Lexicon  - Poker Terms Beginning With 'O'

 

Observer - A nonparticipant in a game, that is, someone who has a table window open but is not seated.

 

Observer chat - Comments, which appear in the chat box, from observers.

 

Odd chip - When splitting a pot, either among tied hands or between the high half and the low half in high-low split games, sometimes a chip is left over, usually of the smallest denomination for the game. That chip is called the odd chip, and various rules come into play to determine which player gets the chip.

 

Odds - The probability of an event to actually happen. For example, if you have a 25% chance to nab the pot, the odds are 3:1 against you.

 

Odds against - Number of failures per success.

 

Odds for -The number of attempts per success.

 

Offsuit  - Cards of a different suit.

 

Omaha  -A game in which each player is dealt four down cards with five community cards. To make your hand, you must play two cards from your hand and three from the board.

 

Omaha 8-or-better - Another name for Omaha high-low.

 

Omaha H/L - A short name for Omaha high-low.

 

Omaha hi/lo - Another name for Omaha high-low.

 

Omaha high-low - A variant of Omaha in which the pot is split between the holder of the highest hand and the holder of the lowest hand if that low hand is topped by no worse than an 8.

 

Omaholic - Someone who loves to play Omaha.

On the Button  - Being the last player to act in a betting round. Dealer's Position.

 

On board - In Texas Hold 'em, a reference to 'Community Cards' (the cards that are placed face up on the table and are for all participating players to share, the opposite of 'Pocket Cards').

 

One-Chip Rule - A call of a previous bet using a chip of higher denomination than necessary is considered a call unless it is verbally announced as a raise.

 

On end - A four card straight open only on one end (ex. jack, queen, king, ace).

 

One-Eyed Royals - The Jack of Spades, Jack of Hearts and King of Diamonds.

 

One-Gap - A hold'em starting hand with two cards two apart in rank. Examples: J9s, 64.

 

One Pair - Two cards in a players hand of the same rank. And no other cards of relevance.

 

On tilt - Exaggerated emotional agitation during play causing a player to ignore the strength or the weakness of his hand.

 

One Way Poker - A poker hand involving the player and only one other.

 

On The Come - To bet on a draw in anticipation of making the hand and winning a bigger pot in the process.

 

Online cardroom - A cardroom that exists only on the Internet, as opposed to a brick and mortar cardroom.

 

Online game - A game played in an online cardroom.

 

Open  - To make the first bet.


Open-ended Straight  - Four consecutive cards whereby one additional (consecutive) card is needed at either end to make a straight.

 

Open Card  - A card that is dealt face-up.

 

Open end - A four card sequence that can be made straight by two different value cards.

 

Open game - A game in which anyone can play.

 

Open-handed - A category of games characterized by a part of each player’s hand being exposed.


Open Pair  - A pair that has been dealt face-up.

 

Open poker - A poker game that requires some of the cards to be dealt face up.

 

Open seat - A chair available for another player.

 

Opener button - A button used to indicate who opened a particular pot in a draw game.

 

Open limp - Being the first person in the pot preflop, but not raising.


Option  - An option is a live blind made before the cards are dealt. If no one raises, the 'option' player may raise the pot.

 

Out Button  - A disc placed in front of a player who wishes to sit out a hand(s), but remain in the game.

 

Outdraw - When a player beats another player by drawing a superior hand.

 

Outs
The number of cards left in the deck that will improve your hand.

 

Outrun - To beat. Example: "Hellen outran my set when her flush card hit on the river."


Outside Straight, Outside Straight Draw - See outside straight draw. Also "two-way straight draw".

 

Overcall - To call a bet after others have called, esp. big bets. Jim bet, Alice called, then Ted overcalled. Compare to "cold call", "flat call", "smooth call".


Overpair  - A pocket pair higher than any of the cards on the board.

 

Overcards - Cards that have a superior rank to a pair.

 

Over The Top - To raise a large bet.

 

Overs - An option to increase the stakes in limit games. Players may elect to play or not play overs; those who choose to play display some sort of token. If, at the beginning of a betting round after the first, only overs players remain in the hand, bets of twice the present limit are allowed. Most often used in home games as a compromise between aggressive and meek players.
